No Child Left Behind Act Information
In January of 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the most comprehensive piece of federal education legislation in history. The 2001 reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), reorganized federal requirements and funding for education nationwide.
NCLB requires states to design accountability programs for all districts and schools that provide for:
- clearly defined proficiency levels for all students in English/Language Arts and Mathematics,
- increased parental "right to know" and provisions for parental choice and involvement,
- higher standards for teacher and paraprofessional quality, and
- the use of scientifically-based research strategies for decision making resource allocation.
